GRIMOIRE Sewalong - Week 4
Share

Welcome back for week 4!
Now that our blocks and frame pieces are all assembled and pressed, we'll make them shine with quilting! Now, you have two options: Quilt-As-You-Go (QAYG) - or the regular way, assembling the whole top and then quilting. QAYG has the benefit that you'll have smaller pieces to quilt, if you want to use your domestic machine to quilt.
Regular Assembly & Quilting
If you want to quilt the top as a whole, now would be the time for assembling the top. Then you'd prepare your quilt for quilting as you usually do. I did this for the banner sample below, using Aurifil Monofilament thread in color "smoke" so it gives a great texture without overpowering the quilt with a color. The grey color also melts perfectly into the black background! I absolutely love the result.

If you're using the regular method and want to have your quilt longarmed, we have an exclusive "Grimoire" pantograph designed by PearPaw Quilting! With code GRIMOIRE you get 50% off this pantograph! I've used it on my banner sample and it turned out just incredible! (I used it with 5.5" height and an adjusted offset on mine).
If you're still looking for a longarmer for your quilt, our friend Amanda from Sweet Pea Design Company is offering 30% off any Grimoire project for E2E longarming!
QUILT AS YOU GO
If you'd like to finish your quilt yourself on your domestic machine, I highly recommend Quilt-As-You-Go. It has one caveat however, it uses more background fabric and batting, because you're quilting your block and frame pieces first before you attach them to each other with sashing. That requires a bit of extra backing fabric.
I love this technique, because the 20" x 25" block size is one that I can comfortably quilt with free-motion techniques or a walking foot on my machine. Make sure you baste your pieces well before quilting and really have fun with them! If you need matching thread to our standard colorway, there is an Aurifil companion palette (Affiliate Link) that gives you all the right colors in one set!
Here you can see some examples of intricate quilting that I did all on my Bernina 770 QE domestic machine! I used the Aurifil thread set for this.

I'll see you next week for QAYG assembly tips and finishing/hanging tips for your finished quilted project!
I'd love to see your progress! If you post on Instagram or Facebook, make sure you tag me @GingerlyQuiltCo, so I can see and reshare your work ❤️
